CESSI staff led collaborators
at the Research and Training Center on Managed Care
and Disability at NRH RC to study the effect of managed
care on people with disabilities. This study provided
clinical insight when comparing people with disabilities
who are in managed care and those in other insurance
plans. Comparisons of managed care experiences were
also made between individuals with disabilities and
those without disabilities. The impact of the type
of disability, as well as a detailed exploration of
the physicians’ roles and attitudes, was addressed.
This project used quantitative and experiential data
to investigate how a person’s disability played
a role in the quality of health care. It focused on
access to care, use of primary care and specialty care,
preventive services, and how physician specialty impacted
on needs addressed. The quality of care was examined
within categories of disabilities, with consideration
given to functional and medical dimensions.
Three individual pilot interviews provided the moderator’s
guide for eight subsequent focus groups. Each focus
group empanelled eight to twelve participants. Results
from prior interviews were used to modify the script,
asking subsequent panelists their views on opinions
expressed by previous respondents.
