Disability Awareness Training
For NASA, CESSI is providing
support to the Office of Human Resources to develop
web-based and instructor led training on
Disability Awareness. This training focuses on hiring
practices, the accommodation process, and creating
access to information as required
under Sections 501, 504, and 508 of the Rehabilitation
Act, as amended.
CESSI is applying proven adult education
techniques to this requirement. The training is designed
to ensure the managers and supervisors understand their
role in the processes, what they must
consider, and how to effectively respond to employee
requirements in compliance with the law. The emphasis
of the course is on the process
and behavior changes required within the organization
rather than trying to make the managers and supervisors
experts on the Rehabilitation Act.
The first step is
to develop web-based training that will be required
for all NASA managers and supervisors.
This training will provide the common foundation for
subsequent instructor-led training.
The web-based training is designed in modules to ensure
the participant masters content in each of the Sections
of the Rehabilitation Act.
The instructor-led training
we are developing allows for greater interaction and
more in-depth coverage of the issues and requirements
of the Rehabilitation Act as they relate to managers and
supervisors. We will pilot this course at a location
in the Washington, DC area. Based on participant feedback,
we will modify the course before
making arrangements to conduct this training at the
various national NASA centers. It is the goal of this
program to train approximately 20,000
managers and supervisor across the country.
In preparing
this training, our instructional designers develop
a training design concept, prepare an instructor’s guide
and compile a participant’s notebook.
